The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Viagra (sildenafil) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men, with the drug being the first of the medicines to be approved for use in women. It is the only drug approved for that use in women.
The drug was approved in the United States on March 21 and in the European Union on March 26, 2017.
The drug was the first of a new category of medicines known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which help to relax the blood vessels in the penis by blocking PDE5, a chemical in the enzyme that breaks down cyclic GMP in the penis.
These medicines were originally developed for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, but they were also used to treat angina, and now they are approved for treatment of erectile dysfunction. However, the FDA has now approved a number of other conditions for which a PDE5 inhibitor is not recommended, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and diabetes.
In the United Kingdom, Viagra is the first of two medicines approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Viagra is also the first of the newer medicines for erectile dysfunction to treat pulmonary hypertension. The drug also has the same effects in men and women.
Viagra is available only in the United States. It is also not available as a generic. Viagra can be bought as a tablet or taken as a liquid form. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug for sexual activity with a man under 18.
It is not known how much Viagra will affect people who already have erectile dysfunction, and the medicine has not been shown to affect an unborn baby. Viagra is not recommended for use by women, and may not be used by men with diabetes or heart disease.
